Extend sleep with a baby hammock

The gentle swaying motion of a baby hammock is reminiscent of the time in the womb and meets your baby's need for closeness, helping your baby feel calm and secure.

How can a baby hammock help?

Is your baby going through a sleep regression? Or does life with two children call for more relief? Perhaps you need a safe place where your baby can rest while you have your hands free. Whether it's about sleep difficulties, lack of time or the need for a soothing place, a baby hammock can be the solution.

A baby hammock is a cradle that hangs from a hook in the ceiling or a freestanding stand. It is designed to gently sway back and forth, mimicking the movements your baby experienced in the womb. This can have a calming effect and help your baby fall asleep more easily and sleep longer.

Benefits of a baby hammock

  • Better sleep

Gives babies more restful sleep by recreating the soothing motion of the womb.

  • Save time

Gives parents the chance to focus on other tasks or rest for a while as the baby sleeps safely.

  • Natural posture

Promotes healthy spine development by ensuring a correct position during sleep.

The difference between a baby hammock and a cradle

The biggest difference between the baby hammock and the cradle is the type of base. The shape of the hammock creates an enveloping environment so the baby feels embraced while sleeping. The slightly curved position, reminiscent of the time in the womb, helps the baby relax and settle down.

If your baby doesn't enjoy the shape of the hammock, the cradle is an excellent alternative. It has longer inner dimensions and a flat base, which suits babies who prefer more space when they sleep or who tend to get warm during sleep. The cradle is designed for babies who like to watch everything going on around them. However, the more open design can sometimes feel overwhelming for newborns, which makes the hammock a safer choice for the very youngest.

Both are powered by the same motor, giving a soothing and calming effect. Which type suits best therefore mainly depends on your baby's preferences. That's why it's so convenient that you can rent and try them out to find the one that works best for you.

Should I choose the stand, the ceiling mount or the door clamp?

Moonboon Fixi mattress – rent, test and buy at Parently

Can my active baby sleep safely in a baby hammock?

Of course! With the Fixi mattress from Moonboon, your baby can sleep both safely and comfortably. Although it's completely normal for a baby to move a lot during sleep, it can sometimes disturb their sleep pattern. The Fixi mattress is equipped with a luxuriously soft, quilted support belt that gently keeps your baby in place in the middle of the mattress. It can help your baby stay more still and give you peace of mind knowing your baby is sleeping safely. The mattress fits Moonboon's cradle, baby hammock and twin baby hammock.

Benefits of renting a baby hammock

  • Test it first

By renting, you can try the baby hammock in your home and see if it suits your baby and your everyday life. You might discover that it helps your baby settle faster or extends their sleep. Renting gives you the opportunity to test the hammock in practice without committing to a purchase, making your choice of product both safer and more flexible.

  • Cost-effective

A baby hammock is usually only used during the first months, until your baby starts to sit, kneel or pull themselves up. By renting, you can use the hammock for as long as you need it and easily return it once your baby has outgrown it. You only pay for the time you use it and avoid both large one-off costs and the hassle of reselling it. A practical and economical solution for families with young children!

  • Easy to travel with

The baby hammock can easily be taken apart and packed back into the bag it was delivered in, so it can join you and your little one on your trip. Whether you're visiting family, going on a weekend getaway or travelling abroad, the hammock can come along and give your baby a familiar and safe place to sleep. Remember to check which power outlet is used at your destination and pack an adapter kit if needed – so you can enjoy better sleep wherever you are.

Moonboon White Noise Machine – rent, test and buy at Parently

Can a white noise machine help my baby sleep better?

White noise can be an excellent aid if your baby finds it easier to fall asleep in noisy environments than during their usual naps or at bedtime. Infants are used to being surrounded by sounds, so a completely silent environment can have the opposite effect of what you expect at bedtime.

A white noise machine creates a calmer sleep environment with its soothing sounds. The sound, which resembles that of the womb and mimics the mother's heartbeat, reminds the baby of the safe and familiar environment of the womb – a place where they feel safe and protected, which is the foundation of good sleep. In addition, the speaker helps block out surrounding noise that can disturb your baby's sleep.

When should I use a stiffening base?

The baby hammock is designed to fit snugly around the baby and provide comfort, but as your baby grows, the space becomes tight. To give your baby firm support, we therefore recommend using a stiffening base in the hammock from approx. 3-4 months, depending on your baby's weight and size.

The stiffening base can be placed under the mattress or used instead of the mattress when your baby gets a little bigger. It helps flatten and extend the lying surface of the hammock, giving your baby enough space to relax and sleep comfortably. However, using the stiffening base is not a requirement.

Frequently asked questions

When and for how long can I use the cradle?

The cradle replaces the need for a bed or a floor-standing cradle. Use it as your baby's favourite sleeping place or as a complement to the baby hammock and baby wrap.

The cradle has been developed for infants and children from 3 kg. If you use the cradle after your baby has learned to roll over on their own, we recommend keeping your baby under constant supervision so that they don't fall out of the cradle.

How long can my baby sleep in the baby hammock?

Moonboon always refers to the recommendations issued by health authorities. They have not issued any specific recommendations for the use of a baby hammock. In principle, your baby can sleep in the hammock for as long as needed.

However, we recommend using the baby hammock as a complement to a proper bed, as your baby should also be able to sleep on a firm mattress.

If you are unsure about your baby's sleep patterns and needs, we recommend talking to your doctor or health visitor.

Can I use a baby hammock for my newborn?

Yes, you can use the baby hammock for your newborn baby. Make sure to place your baby safely in the middle of the mattress and test which swing speed on the motor suits your baby best.

How many kilograms can the cradle hold?

The cradle can hold up to 12 kg with the standard spring and up to 20 kg with the spring+.

When and for how long can I use the twin baby hammock?

The twin baby hammock is designed for twins with a combined weight of 4-20 kg. The babies can rest in the hammock at the same time or separately, depending on their sleep habits, as it is also designed to balance one baby at a time.

Can my baby sleep in the baby hammock at night?

You can use the baby hammock at night without any problem. However, it is important not to let your baby sleep in the hammock unsupervised.

We recommend using the baby hammock as a complement, as your baby must also have the opportunity to sleep on a firm mattress. The baby hammock should never replace a proper bed.

We do not recommend using a baby hammock once your baby can roll over. Also keep in mind that your baby must be able to turn their head freely and that the head is not pressed against the chest.

What are the benefits of using a cradle for my baby?

Babies are accustomed to being held and rocked during the time they spent in their mother's womb, so this is a sensation they associate with feeling safe and relaxed—a prerequisite for good sleep. The gentle rocking motions of a cradle with a spring and a rocking function mimic this sensation, making the little ones feel cradled and held while being rocked to sleep with soft movements. This often means that babies find it easier to fall asleep, sleep with fewer or no interruptions, and wake up only when they are fully rested. In addition to helping your baby sleep more and better, a cradle also gives you as a parent the opportunity to have your hands free for other activities, such as playing with older children, enjoying some time for yourself, or simply taking a nap.
